Distracted motorists – including those ogling pedestrians – cause 921,840 crashes per year.
Research from insurance providers Direct Line has revealed shocking details on just how common it is for drivers of both sexes to be distracted by attractive pedestrians. Direct Line’s study of 2142 drivers found that 60% of men and 12% of women admitted to taking their eyes off the road in favour of eyeing-up an attractive pedestrian.
17% of the male drivers also admitted that they were aware that their actions were dangerous, but claimed that they couldn’t avoid looking.
The findings suggest that it’s not just pretty pedestrians who are causing a problem: advertising billboards featuring picture-perfect models distract 21% of drivers.
A spokesman for Direct Line was quick to ensure that the findings were taken seriously, saying: “Stealing a quick look at an attractive pedestrian or billboard model may well be a bit of fun but, on a serious note, drivers shouldn’t underestimate that this type of distraction is a major contributing factor in road accidents.
“The number of crashes caused in this way have not changed year on year so drivers obviously are not learning to keep their eyes on the road.”
Between 2008 and 2009, an incredible 921,840 people admitted to crashing because they were distracted by the opposite sex. Summer is the worst time for the accidents, perhaps due to the skimpy outfits and exposed skin that accompany it.
So, learners, keep those eyes on the road and don’t write off your car while checking out a nice bum; it’s really not worth it.
